Make a small bedroom look bigger with Fineline wardrobes

Having an apartment or home with small rooms can have its charms and challenges. If done right, a small room can feel like a cosy haven. But if done wrong, a small room can feel cramped and claustrophobic. The good news is that you can make a small room feel bigger by simply tricking the eye into perceiving more space. Today, we look specifically at how to make a small bedroom look bigger with the help of Fineline wardrobes.

Fineline Wardrobe Solutions

Fineline Wardrobe Solutions has been designing and installing custom built-in wardrobes for 40 years. No matter how big or small your bedroom is, a wardrobe is an essential item to create a functional and decluttered space.

Fineline’s built-in wardrobes are the perfect solution for small bedrooms. For starters, we custom design each wardrobe to precisely match the room’s dimensions. To maximise space, we install our wardrobes directly on the wall, eliminating any unnecessary wasted storage space between the wall and the back of the cupboard. Our carefully designed internals ensure that you can neatly store all your clothes and shoes, maintaining a clutter-free room.

Fineline Wardrobe Solutions also only use sliding wardrobe doors across their wardrobes. Sliding wardrobe doors are the best solution for saving floor space in a small bedroom, as they slide on tracks across the cupboard rather than hinged doors that open out into the space. We can manufacture our sliding doors in a variety of finishes, but certain finishes and design details can create the illusion of a larger room.

Mirror, mirror on the wall…

Ever heard the term smoke and mirrors? When it comes to creating illusions (especially space illusions), using mirrors is one of the oldest tricks in the book. In interior design, using large mirrors on the wall always creates a greater sense of openness. Mirrors reflect natural light, making a space feel lighter, brighter, and airier. In addition, mirrors also reflect the view, thereby tricking the eye into perceiving more space and make a small bedroom look bigger.

Fineline’s floor-to-ceiling mirror sliding wardrobe doors will work magic and make a small bedroom look bigger by reflecting light and space, creating the illusion of ‘double’ the area available.

As white as a cloud

Another age-old trick is to use white’s reflective qualities. A white-painted room makes it feel airy, light, calm, and serene. Painting the walls and ceiling white (especially white with a sheen to it) will give the room a cloud-like effect. It blurs the boundaries between wall and ceiling, causing your eye to travel up, making the ceiling look higher than it is.

Fineline has two white sliding wardrobe doors that will work perfectly in a small, white-painted bedroom. The first is our classic white woodgrain melamine sliding doors. These doors have a slight wood grain texture and a sheen that reflects light and helps to make a small bedroom look bigger.

For a more modern look, our Opti White decor glass sliding doors will turn heads. Opti White decor glass has a pure white colour and all the reflective qualities of glass, which will softly bounce light all around the room and will make a small bedroom look bigger.

Tip: If you are worried that an all-white space will feel too cold and clinical, then pair it with warming elements such as wood or textured accessories such as shaggy scatter pillows or throws.

Unfortunately, white is more than just white. There are actually different tones of white. If you aren’t sure which white tone is correct for your bedroom, here are some handy tips on how to choose the perfect white for you.

Play with the vertical for height

By using just one element that emphasises the vertical space, the room can feel taller and more open. Vertical lines make the eye travel up, enhancing a feeling of movement and flow.

Fineline’s wardrobes and sliding wardrobe doors are designed from floor to ceiling. We can install 2, 3, or 4 sliding doors across a wardrobe space. Each door has an aluminium frame. The aluminum frames create floor-to-ceiling vertical lines that lead the eye upward, creating the illusion of a higher space. The beauty of this trick is that you don’t need to use only one material across the various sliding doors. You can use different materials on the individual sliding doors to create interest and emphasize the vertical lines even more, thereby making a small bedroom look bigger.

The Fineline wardrobe’s thin sliding wardrobe doors create vertical lines that direct the eye upwards, enhancing the room’s illusion of height. Here, we used a combination of mirror and grey decor glass on each individual sliding door.

Play with the horizontal for width

Similar to vertical lines, horizontal lines can also create a sense of width in a room. Anything that causes your eye to travel around a room in an intentional and orderly fashion will make it feel larger.

The design options for Fineline’s sliding wardrobe doors are endless. Fineline can even create horizontal lines on their sliding wardrobe doors to create the illusion of width. Split wooden field panels or aluminium strips can break up the sliding doors horizontally, creating movement and flow, thereby making a small bedroom look bigger.

These sliding doors are white melamine split field panels with mirror inserts. The evenly spaced horizontal lines create movement across the wall-to-wall wardrobe, making the room look wider.

Creating small rooms that work is all about editing and keeping things simple. A few clever tricks, like the ones mentioned above, will create the illusion of a bigger space. However, it doesn’t stop there. You have to be mindful of not cramming your space full of possessions, pieces, and patterns, which will immediately make the room look cramped and cluttered. Here are a few extra handy tips when styling a small bedroom.
