Tips on how to dress for success

It's a New Year and that means it is time to start afresh. You've probably made several New Year's resolutions, whether it's eating well, organising your cupboards or just spending more time outdoors; but what about making one of your resolutions dressing for success?

Dressing well ensures that you put your best foot forward when meeting new people, helping you make a good first impression. So, whether you're just going back to work after the December break, starting a brand-new job or perhaps are going to an interview; why not start the year on the right note, go through your closet and ensure that you're ready to dress for success.

You're probably standing in front of your closet, staring at your work clothes and wondering what exactly dressing for success means. Dressing for success isn't just about wearing traditional professional attire; rather it is about always presenting yourself in the best possible way.

Here are some tips to help you dress for success:

Dress to impress

First impressions matter, especially when you're entering a new workplace or going to a job interview. Dressing to impress doesn't necessarily mean that you need the most expensive pair of shoes, or the most professional-looking work outfit. Rather, dressing to impress focuses on your appearance – are you neat and tidy? Are your clothes presentable?

To ensure that your clothes remain in the best possible condition throughout the year ahead, so that all you need to do is pull them out of your closet and put them on, you need to ensure that they are stored correctly.

· Hang your pants on a clothes hanger rather than folding them to ensure that they don't get fold marks or creased.

· Blouses and shirts should also be hung up on clothes hangers to avoid getting creases.

· Heavier items such as sweaters can be folded in a drawer or shelf, as hanging them can cause them to stretch over time.

· Store your formal blazers in garment bags and hang to ensure that they remain dust-free and in good condition for the year ahead.

· Prevent moth-eaten holes in your favourite cashmere work sweater by moth-proofing your closet with either mothballs or blocks of cedarwood.

Put your best foot forward

Your shoes are one of the first things people notice and, as such, you need to make sure that they are always in good condition and that they are clean and polished. To ensure that your shoes stay in the best possible condition throughout the year, it is important that you take proper care of them.

· To prevent your shoes from scuffing and to ensure that they don't get damaged in your wardrobe, store your shoes in flannel shoe bags.

· To ensure that your shoes maintain their shape, you can stuff them with tissue paper when you're not wearing them.

· Rather than just throwing your shoes in your closet, look at getting a proper shoe rack to stack your shoes on. This will further help prevent them from being damaged by or squashed underneath your other shoes.

Choose accessories that flatter your outfit

Accessories can make or break an outfit, especially in a professional setting. When choosing the right accessories for your outfit you should try not to over-accessorize or wear anything too bold or bright (that includes ties!). Always try and keep your accessories understated and make sure that they match your outfit, after all, you don't want to wear a belt that clashes with your shoes!

· Store your professional accessories in your cupboard by getting an accessories hanger with pouches or a drawer organiser that has compartments, for smaller work accessories such as cufflinks and watches.

· Make sure your ties and scarves don't get creased in your cupboard hanging them up on an accessories hanger.

· Make sure that you polish your belt buckle and cufflinks regularly.

If you look good, you will feel good and if you feel good you will have the confidence you need to succeed. These tips will help you to put your best foot forward for the New Year and dress for success.
