The 5 Golden Rules to Buying Linen

Getting a good night's sleep is more essential than ever in our fast paced world. On average, we spend a third of our lives in our beds, shouldn't that much time be made as comfortable as possible? You have the stylish bed board and the Posturepedic mattress that cost more than your wedding; but if you're still tossing and turning, you may need to have a look at your linen.

Here are the 5 biggest secrets to buying bed linen that will send you into bliss and last you for years.

1. Look for Natural Materials
Investing in linen with all natural fibers such as cotton or silk, if you prefer, prevent your sheets from piling, unlike synthetic materials which dissipate when they are washed.

2. What Does Your Body Temperature Tell You
People tend to be hot or cold sleepers. If you're a hot sleeper, you'll usually wake up in a sweat or if you're a cold sleeper you'll want to have a lot of blankets and duvets to cuddle up in. Hot sleepers should look for more breathable sheet options such as cotton, percale while a cold sleeper would prefer sheets that create a warmer haven like sateen or twill.

3. Higher Thread Count Doesn't Mean Better Sheets
The untold truth about "thread count" is that it's mostly for marketing. The general understanding is that more threads equal better sheets overall but manufacturers often stuff a larger number of low-quality threads into a smaller space for a higher thread count. Focus on the quality of the fabric used rather than the number of threads.

4. Check the Manufacturing Process
When your bed is made, a little wrinkle in the sheet is enough to drive you crazy. We all want a crisp, iron-board flat bed, but what is the process on wrinkle free sheets? Some sheets promise to be permanently pressed and stay wrinkle free for years, but they have gone through an intense chemical process to be able to achieve this, and that is no good for your skin or your sleep.

5. Neutral Colours
Try to stick to neutral colours for your bedding especially if you want to have the same sheets for years. Neutral colours can be matched to almost any room and can keep up with a change in style tastes and accessory changes. Sheets with bright colours and extreme patterns will take centre stage of your room and will require everything else to conform to that style. Not to mention, white sheets are the easiest to clean with bleach where colours are more difficult when it comes to stain removal.

Now let's get moving and create a fresh new space for you to enjoy.
