Fun, interesting things to do in December in Johannesburg


What, you're not taking leave this December! So,it's to be a December spent in Johannesburg for you! Well, luckily we've found some interesting local things for you and your family to do that should cater for, and please, all tastes.

For animal lovers:

Montecasino Bird Park, Fourways
Is home to over 142 species of birds, a collection of African cycads as well as mammals, reptiles, amphibians and other small creatures. Watch Flight of Fantasy - " A breathtaking display of many birds in unrestrained flight during the course of an educational and entertaining 40-minute presentation".
Open: 08h30 to 17h00 daily. Closed Mondays & Tuesdays, hours may differ on public holidays.

Johannesburg Zoo, Parkview
Houses over 320 species of animals such as the rare white lions, elephants, polar bears, chimpanzees, gorillas, hippos, bat-eared foxes and antelope. It's a great place for children to enjoy and learn about the animals.
Open: 08h30 to 17h30 daily, 7 days per week, hours may differ on public holidays.

For picnic lovers:

Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens, Roodepoort
Has 300 hectares of landscaped and natural veld, with over 600 plant species and 220 bird species, several reptiles and small mammals like antelope and jackal. There are several interesting walks through the gardens and a trail alongside the waterfall to explore whilst enjoying your picnic outing.
Open: 08h30 to 17h00 daily,7 days per week, including public holidays.

Delta Park, Victory Park
Has 104 hectares of grassland and woodland where runners or walkers and their dogs enjoy the many walking trails. The park also has three small dams as well as the Florence Bloom bird sanctuary where you can observe a variety of species of birds. Several tranquil delightful spots are ideal for family picnics.

For history buffs:

Liliesleaf Farm, Rivonia
This looks like a peaceful country retreat, but its history lies in the days "when Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed faction of the African National Congress, embarked on a campaign of sabotage and bombing to draw attention to the civil rights struggle". Here you will learn about the Rivonia Trial and how Nelson Mandela was captured and locked away on Robben Island.
Open: 08h30 to 17h00 weekdays. 09h00 to 16h00 Saturdays & Sundays, hours may differ on public holidays.

The National Museum of Military History, Saxonwold
Is a definite for those interested in weapons, military aircraft, medals, uniforms and other war memorabilia. It holds a collection of over 44 000 items from both world wars as well as the civil war against Apartheid.
Open: 09h00 to 16h30 daily. Closed on Good Friday, Christmas Day and the first Sunday in September.

For exercise fanatics

Cycle Lab Bike Park, Bryanston
Comprises 20 hectares of land with 13km of trails. It is part of a natural wetland and is an adventure and skills playground for mountain bikers, trail runners, beginners and professionals of any age group. It offers a safe and secure environment in which to to learn, practise and play.

Northgate Skate Rink, North Riding
This venue is for you whether you're already into ice-skating or whether you're needing a professional instructor to guide and teach you.
Open: 9h30 - 12h30; 13h30 - 16h30; 18h30 -21h00 daily (Tuesday evenings are half-price)

For adrenaline junkies:

Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, Midrand
Kyalami hosts a number of events and races during the year which are not exclusive to cars, but also feature motorbikes and other vehicles. Don't miss the 2020 Kyalami 9 Hour which will run from 10-12 December.

Randburg Raceway Indoor Karting Track
With imported karts in 3 sizes and the latest in safety equipment, they cater for drivers from ages 7 to 70. They offer quick 10 minute races, Grand Prix style events or Endurance races, so everyone is sure to be exhilarated and satisfied.
