5 Holiday Packing Tips: From Wardrobe To Suitcase

Finally! Your holiday is here, but deciding on what clothing to pack in your suitcase is already stressing you out. Here are some recommendations for maximising suitcase space and minimising creasing your garments and your suitcase weight.

1. Perfect your Outfit Planning

Be sure to check the weather before making a list of the outfits for your trip.
Stick to a simple formula:

  • 2 or 3 tops for every skirt or pair of trousers. Skirts or pants take up more room and can be worn several times.
  • 1 pair of shoes for each shoe type needed i.e. sneakers, flats or sandals, and heels. Keep these to a minimum if possible to save on suitcase weight and space!

A neutral colour scheme with a couple of fun, coordinating shades will make selecting your clothing easier. Spread the items out on your bed, scrutinise them and reduce these by nifty mixing and matching.

2. Rolling versus Folding your Clothes

To prevent your clothes from creasing and using up more space, roll your clothes:
Tops: put these face-down, fold in the sleeves then roll them from the bottom up.
Pants: put the legs together and roll from the waist down.
Fold heavier garments like jackets and jeans.

3. Filling Shoes

Save space and tuck socks, underwear, jewellery etc. into your shoes. To protect your clothes from dirt, pack each pair of shoes heel to toe in a fabric or shopping bag, with the soles facing outwards.

4. Pack Like a Pro

  • Start with heavier items like shoes, hairdryers, handbags. Keep these at the wheeled end of your suitcase. This helps your luggage stay stable when upright, and stops other items from getting crushed.
  • Add your rolled clothing.
  • Place folded items on top of rolled clothes - vertically and not stacked horizontally - to save space and for easy viewing.
  • Add the bulkier items like chunky knitwear and jackets.
  • Finish off with any crushable items but, if you're heading off to a function or a meeting just after getting off the plane, then pack that outfit last so that when you arrive, getting ready will be a cinch.

5. Wear the heavy items as part of your travel outfit

Remember to keep aside your travel outfit. Be smart and economise on suitcase space and weight by wearing a heavy item like your boots or shoes and carry a jacket or chunky jersey as part of your travel outfit.

But what about your toiletries? The Airports Company South Africa has special rules for toiletries - i.e. Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGs). To find out what the current rules are, visit:
